How to choose the right Apple Watch
Apple Watch is the best wearable to pair with an iPhone. In 2022, Apple launched three new models: Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 8, and Apple Watch SE 2. But which Apple Watch is the best of the lot? Your fitness routine, budget, watch build material, and even your wrist size will all affect which Apple Watch is ideal for you. With so many possibilities, it isn’t always true that the newest is the best. Apple launched different models for specific people, so you may have an older one that is still useful and valuable. First, evaluate your needs and preferences and match them with the Watch features. All newer Apple Watches have the most current features, such as always-on screens, sophisticated sensors, updated software, and additional sports tools. Another factor to consider when purchasing a new Apple Watch is its pricing. Apple usually charges more for its new models and stops selling the old model. However, you can still get them at several e-commerce stores (sometimes for a significant discount). These watches offer similar appearances and features. So, let’s see which is best for you and if the cheaper old models are suitable.
1. Apple Watch Ultra – Best for sports and adventure lovers
Display: 1.9″ OLED Build: Titanium frame Processor: S8 Storage: 32GB Battery: 542 mAh IP rating: IP6X; Water-resistant to 100m and swim-proof to 40m
Apple Watch Ultra is the ultimate outdoor sports watch meant to sustain rugged use. If you want to engage in outdoor activities, this is undoubtedly the finest Apple Watch to buy. It is certified to the MIL-STD-810H military standard for sturdiness. You will get a flat sapphire crystal display with a 49-mm impact-resistant titanium shell. It offers unique features like a dual-frequency GPS system, Siren, Depth app, Night Mode, etc. Also, the Action button allows access to a range of customizable functions. Besides, three built-in microphones with unique wind-reduction algorithms let you take work calls hassle-free. The best part is that Apple Watch Ultra offers 60 hours of battery life. So, overall it is pricey yet effective. Nevertheless, after extensive testing, I can confidently say if you equip Apple Watch with accessories, it is the most excellent wearable from Apple.

2. Apple Watch Series 8 – Health-focused
Display: 1.69 / 1.9″ OLED Build: Stainless steel frame Processor: S8 chip Storage: 32GB Battery: 308 mAh IP rating: IP6X; Water-resistant to 50m
If you want to know which Apple Watch a woman should buy, Apple Watch Series 8 is ideal. It offers menstruation cycle tracking and lets you monitor your fertility window. Besides, there are life-saving features like Crash Detection and health monitoring features such as ECG, nightly wrist temperature tracking, Heart Rate Zone tracking, Cardio Recovery, etc. So, it’s best for older people to stay safe and healthy. Though it’s a good all-arounder with all essential functionalities, you don’t need to upgrade if you currently have an Apple Watch Series 7. WatchOS 9 has the majority of the new features, not the hardware. Only the dedicated temperature sensors and three new stainless steel finishes are significant additions to Series 8.
Full of fitness and health-focused features Advanced temperature sensors Menstruation and ovulation cycle tracking New workout interface
Not much upgrade from Apple Watch Series 7
3. Apple Watch SE (2nd gen) – Affordable
Display: 1.78″ OLED Build: Aluminum frame Processor: S8 chip Storage: 32GB Battery: 296 mAh IP rating: Water-resistant to 50m
The SE Watch is Apple’s entry-level model. It’s recommended for people who want to have an Apple Watch but are tight on budget and not so health or sports-focused. Apple Watch SE 2nd gen lacks unique features like a blood oxygen meter, ECG, periods cycle tracking, and the ultrawideband chip for AirTags. Also, the display is smaller and not IP6X certified like the other two Apple Watch. However, it incorporates the most recent S8 chip and all common WatchOS 9 features like Low Power mode. So, if you don’t need the Always on display and particular health or outdoor-specific features, it’s the best Apple Watch to buy. Its 40-mm case size with a nylon back makes it lighter. Also, the 1000 nits bright display is crisp. Surprisingly, the battery here outperformed expectations, lasting around two days. So, SE will suit you perfectly if you only want a basic smartwatch.
Light and beginner-friendly Latest chipset Affordable with all features Color-matched casing
No Always-on display and ECG Not IP6 certified
4. Apple Watch Series 7 – Get more for less
Display: 1.69 / 1.9″ OLED Build: Stainless steel frame Processor: S7 chip Storage: 32GB Battery: 309 mAh IP rating: IP6X; Water-resistant to 50m
Series 7 was one of the finest sports watches last year, thanks to its improved water- and dust resistance, updated algorithms, larger screen, fitness tracking modes, and full-size keyboard for messaging. It apparently looks the same as the Series 8 and offers all WatchOS 9 features. The only shortcoming is its S7 chipset. Apple has discontinued selling it, and you may get it in e-commerce stores. So, I suggest purchasing it only at discounted prices under $300.
Offers the same features as Series 8 at a lesser price Supports WatchOS 9 Good battery life
No temperature sensors Supports Bluetooth 5.0
Are older versions of Apple Watch still worth buying?
Apple Watch Series 1, Series 2, or Series 3 is now only available on resale websites. So, they are not worth the money. Furthermore, you cannot purchase them for your family since Family Setup only works on Series 4 and above. Also, these watches have cellular capabilities, but neither is waterproof nor compatible with WatchOS 9.
What is the ideal Apple Watch for 2023?
All Apple Watches will have almost similar basic features and quality standards. However, depending on your needs, you may decide whether to get the powerful Apple Watch Ultra or the affordable Apple Watch Series 8.
It’s okay if you want an Apple Watch but cannot afford the Apple Watch 8. However, the Apple Watch SE 2 is excellent since not everyone requires blood oxygen and ECG monitoring. Besides, the Ultra is the obvious choice if you want adventure features, such as sirens, a dive computer, etc.
If you’re searching for something premium, consider the Apple Watch Hermès edition. It offers the same functionality as Series 8 in addition to exclusive bands and watch faces.
While Apple may not sell every model, some stores still sell Apple Watch Series 7. If you want to experience Series 8 at a lesser price, go for it. The Series 7 still has essential functionality and software support, making it valuable.
