While this might seem like a minor change, it can have a great impact on iPhone sales. Previously, Apple allowed buyers to buy iPhones on monthly installments using Apple Card and users could choose “Connect to a carrier later” in which they could choose carrier company later. This also made it easy for users to choose the carrier company of their choice if they don’t want to use companies like AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. Other options include Mint Mobile or Google Fi. However, the option for monthly installments will not be available for Apple Card users who want to buy a new iPhone starting from August 15 onwards.
No Carrier Contract, No Monthly Installment
Apple already does not sell iPhones with Connect to Carrier later option on monthly installments using Apple Card via its official stores. If someone has to buy a new iPhone on a monthly installment without choosing the carrier company, they will have to get the iPhone from a third-party store. Now, Apple will block this as well. The option will not be available altogether and the new iPhones bought using installments with Apple Card must be tied to a carrier company or iPhone will not set up. It means Apple will still sell a SIM-free iPhone but the setup process will not be completed unless the iPhone has a valid carrier connection from AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon. While Apple has not made any announcement about this but the same can be found in a footnote under iPhone 14 buying page. Apple writes: “Currently, carrier connection with AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon is required for all iPhone purchases made with ACMI from Apple Store locations only. Starting August 15, 2023, carrier connection with AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon is required for all iPhone purchases made with ACMI.” Another big change that Apple is bringing for Apple Card users is the reduction in the number of installments allowed for Apple Watch purchases. Previously, the company allowed users to buy Apple Watch using Apple Card for up to 24 months installment period. However, Apple is now limiting such purchases to 12 months. The option to get a 24-month installment period for Apple Watch using Apple Card will not be available starting August 15.
